On August 9, 2017, BugandaWatch reliably learnt from sources at Kasubi that both foreign and local tourists have returned to Kasubi Royal Tombs. And that the tourists pay money to the site security guards who allow them to enter and get a guided tour of the compound.

As a sign that some Mengo officials are aware of what is going on, the head of Kabaka Protection Unit, Captain Stanley Musaazi, recently visited Kasubi and ordered the guards to stop the practice immediately. However, on the same day, the guards allowed more groups of paying tourists to enter and get guided tours.

The decision by the guards to ignore orders from the commander of the Kabaka Protection Unit suggests that there might be competing interests in Mengo over the tourist visits. The official position is unclear, just like where the money collected by the guards from the tourists goes.
