On July 10, 2017, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, donated over UGX 110 million from Buganda Government to the Central Public Health Laboratory, which is run by the health ministry in the NRM government. While the money is supposed to support a sickle cell unit located at Butabika, it is difficult to know that the plan will work due to the chronically the high level of corruption in the ministry and the rest of the NRM government.

The Katikkiro handed the UGX 110 million check to NRM health minister, Mrs. Sarah Opendi, who represented the Uganda government.

Mr. Mayiga donated the relatively huge amount of money, by local standards, at a time when Buganda owned health facilities are in terrible conditions. The money was part of the proceeds from the April 9, 2017 Kabaka Birthday Run. However, the Katikkiro did not disclose the total amount that was collected from the run and how much remained to support the Kabaka’s health initiatives.

The event was attended by Mengo ministers, Uganda government officials and Kampala city authority executive officer, Jennifer Musisi.
