The organizers of Buganda Bumu Convention in United States have announced by an electronic mail campaign that the Katikkiro of Buganda, Mr. Peter Charles Mayiga, will be the guest of honor at the 2017 Buganda Bumu North American Convention. The biennial convention is to be held on May 26 – 29, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
If the Buganda Bumu announcement was cleared by both Mr. Mayiga and Ssaabasajja Kabaka, then it is a clear signal that Mr. Mayiga will not be immediately replaced after his 4 year contract ends on May 13, 2017. The Atlanta conference will take place approximately 2 weeks after his contract end date.
According to the Buganda Bumu announcement, the theme of the convention will be, Tunyweeze Eby’obuwangwa, Eby’obulamu N’okwekulaakulanya (Invest in Cultural Education, Wealth Creation, Health and Wellness Promotion). The main program items will be:
The organizers also promise a variety of entertainment, including “prominent entertainers, comedian and traditional dancers.”
Buganda Bumu convention was started by Kabaka’s representatives in North America, on instructions from Katikkiro Mayiga and Deputy Katikkiro Ssendaula in 2013 (See: First Buganda Bumu North American Convention Set, Without May 24, 1966 Remembrance).
Mengo commissioned Buganda Bumu after the organizers of the first ever annual independent Diaspora Baganda conference, Ttabamiruka in America, refused to agree to Mr. Mayiga’s orders that they stop doing things that annoyed President Museveni: (1) not flying the Uganda flag and not singing the Uganda anthem during Ttabamiruka events, and (2) holding Ttabamiruka events on the same weekend in September as Uganda government sponsored UNAA conferences.
